Llar is a ceramic piece created as a burner for palo santo, dried herbs such as rosemary, or other aromatic plants used to naturally release fragrance.
It is conceived as a functional object for the slow, ritual release of smoke. It is not intended for the use of candles or essential oils, nor to hold a direct flame or liquids.
The design focuses on the gentle combustion of plant material, allowing the aroma to be released gradually and to naturally envelop the space.
In Asturias, llar refers to the hearth fire, the traditional kitchen fireplace and, by extension, the heart of the home. It is not just a physical place, but the space where everyday life comes together: warmth, nourishing food, and the protection of family.
The word comes from the Latin lares, referring to the Lares, Roman deities who protected the home.
Their worship did not take place in grand temples, but in lararia, small household shrines located inside the home, where fire-related rituals were performed to protect both the household and its inhabitants.
This piece reinterprets the Asturian llar as a small house that holds a symbolic flame within, evoking the traditional hearth around which families once gathered. At the same time, it reconnects with the word’s etymological root, becoming a contemporary lararium for the home.
