FILANDÓN

The traditional filandón had a community-based logic that was as practical as it was beautiful: families would gather in the same house to save firewood and light during the winter. By the warmth of the fire, while their hands were busy spinning yarn or repairing tools, conversation flowed freely. It was a space with no spectators, where everyone’s stories, memories and experience held equal value.

Inspired by this tradition, we have created this gathering.

Two days to explore clay from different perspectives, its techniques and its history. But the essence of this filandón lies in the way that structure evolves through what each participant brings: their knowledge, experiences and way of seeing.

We will explore the history of clay, work with the material, and bring back old tales and traditional stories connected to the land and to ceramics.

No previous experience with ceramics is needed. Just a willingness to work with your hands and take part.

SATURDAY 10/10/26

The filandón begins where water springs from between the stones. A first encounter without speeches or rehearsed introductions: simply sitting down and allowing the group to begin forming naturally.

From there, we will set off into the forest. As we make our way along the trail, we will stop for our first encounter with clay. There, we will shape a small piece: a simple object with a deeper meaning that will accompany us throughout the filandón.

We will continue walking to another place in the forest for lunch. In a filandón, nothing was individual: everything was shared. That is why each person will bring something simple from home to contribute to a shared meal. Tasting what someone else has brought, offering something of our own and sitting down together is at the heart of this moment: nourishing ourselves with what everyone brings to the table.

On the way back to the workshop, we will look at the landscape differently, paying attention to the path and gathering small elements from our surroundings that will later find their place on the second piece you will create.

Once we arrive, there will be time for a quiet coffee or herbal tea before we sit down for our second encounter with clay. We will return to one of the oldest ways of shaping clay by hand. Everyone will begin from the same starting point and with the same technique, but each piece will develop its own character.

When we finish, the afternoon will be open for you to continue the conversation, explore the area, stay with us for a while longer or return to your accommodation to rest.

SUNDAY 11/10/26

We will begin in the workshop around the idea of transmission: the crafts and knowledge we inherit or discover. Anyone who wishes will have the opportunity to share a story or experience; and those who would rather remain quiet and simply listen will be just as much a part of it.

In the old filandones, you never had to speak to be part of the gathering: simply being there already contributed to the group.

Next, we will embark on a shared creative proposal. It is a curious moment: seeing how a piece of your own can transform when it no longer belongs to a single person and opens itself to the hands of others.

At midday, a traditional Asturian meal awaits us. Joining the meal is completely optional, so you can decide whether you’d like to come or not. The meal is not included in the price of Filandón and costs €25 per person. There is no obligation to attend.

After lunch, we will sit by the river. By the water's edge, we will bring back the old filandón tradition of passing stories on by word of mouth: old tales and legends about ceramics from the oral traditions of northern Spain.

WHAT IS THIS GATHERING LIKE?

Filandón is not about the demands of an intensive course, but about the slower rhythm of curiosity and shared learning. You do not need to know anything about ceramics or prepare anything to say. Everyone participates in whatever way feels natural: sharing a piece of knowledge if they feel like it, or simply enjoying the work of their hands and listening to others.

The gathering takes place in the surroundings of the Muniellos Nature Reserve in Asturias.

This text is a conceptual guide to the spirit of the filandón and does not reveal the exact locations. Once your booking has been completed and payment received, we will send you a detailed travel guide with all the practical information you need to prepare for your trip:

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

• Duration: Saturday 10 October 2026, 9:20 am–5:30 pm, and Sunday 11 October 2026, 9:20 am–5:30 pm

• Group size: Maximum 8 people

• Price: €165 per person

INCLUDED

• All practical activities and walks over the two days.

• All necessary materials, firing and subsequent delivery of your pieces to your home. Your pieces require approximately one and a half to two weeks to dry completely, so they cannot be taken home at the end of the filandón. Shipping is included for addresses within the Iberian Peninsula.

• Coffee and herbal teas throughout the gathering.

NOT INCLUDED

• Accommodation and transportation to the area.

• Saturday lunch: not included. Each participant should bring something to eat and drink in their backpack to share with everyone during the picnic in the forest.

  Sunday lunch: not included. At midday, we will have lunch together, and a special Asturian menu has been prepared for us at €25 per person. Lunch is completely optional, and each participant can decide whether or not they would like to join. We would appreciate it if you could let us know if you would like to join so that we can reserve your menu.

REQUIREMENTS

This activity is suitable for people aged 11 and over (minors must be accompanied by an adult). Participants must be able to walk independently along rural and forest trails.

The gathering will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Participants must have a sufficient level of Spanish comprehension and spoken communication to take part in the conversations and activities of the filandón.

The journey to the activity location must be made by car. There is no public transport reaching the places where the filandón takes place.

We recommend bringing comfortable clothing that can get dirty and suitable walking shoes.
