FILANDÓN: GATHERINGS TO SHARE KNOWLEDGE

A two-day gathering in the Muniellos Integral Nature Reserve (Asturias), organized by época.

ABOUT YOUR HOSTS

For those who don't know us yet, behind época are Sonia and Jaime. We work as ceramic artists, crafting each piece in our studio in Asturias and sharing them through our online store. In this gathering, we open up our craft through raw materials, history, and the natural landscape that inspires us.

THE JOURNEY OF THE GATHERING

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2026

  • Morning | The Gathering: We will begin our first meeting where water springs from between the rocks. Before stepping into the forest, we will hold space to get to know one another.

  • Morning | First Piece: After completing the first stretch of the path, we will pause to look back in time and understand the true origin of this craft: we will talk about the real need that led human beings to shape clay for the first time nearly 29,000 years ago. Guided by that primitive impulse, we will have our first contact with clay to give form to the opening piece of Filandón, imbued with a very specific intention.

  • Lunch Break | Picnic in the Forest: After walking, it will be time to pause, sit down, and eat in the middle of the forest. Everyone will bring their own packed lunch. We want to retrieve that simple gesture of carrying your own food, unrolling it in a clearing, sitting on a stone, and taking your time to eat while resting and talking with the group.

  • Afternoon | The Landscape and the Studio: On our way to our studio, we will walk with a different perspective. We will enter the forest trying to observe our surroundings like those first humans who approached clay. We will forage a few natural elements, as they will become key tools for our next activity.

We will arrive at our studio for the first time, where we’ll show you our workspace and share more about our way of understanding and working with ceramics.

Afterward, we will return to the clay to discover an essential creative method—one of the oldest and most fascinating ways of working with clay. A tactile, intuitive process where your hands and the elements collected during the walk will interact with the material to bring your second Filandón piece to life.

Once finished, the evening will be free to rest or explore the area.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2026

  • Morning | Memory and Time: We will begin the day in the studio reflecting on permanence. Clay has been the only material capable of keeping the human touch intact for thousands of years. In this phase of Filandón, we will work around this idea to create a piece of personal record—an exercise to capture your own reflection of this gathering and give form to a physical legacy.

  • Optional Lunch: After the morning studio session, we can sit down together for lunch at a local restaurant to enjoy traditional Asturian cuisine. The menu is €25 per person; it is optional, so you are completely free to decide if you'd like to join us.

  • Afternoon | Oral Tradition and Farewell: Sitting by the river, we will close the gathering by reviving the heart of ancient filandones: the oral tradition. We will share stories, tales, and legends rooted in the land, clay, and traditional folklore of northern Spain, bringing the weekend to a close through the spoken word.

WHAT THIS FILANDÓN EXPERIENCE OFFERS

  • Three ways to understand and shape the material: A hands-on experience of three distinct creative processes. From them, you will create three pieces to keep: objects steeped in the history, techniques, and landscape explored in the reserve, serving as a lasting testament to your time at Filandón.

  • Care for the complete process: Working with ceramics requires patience and respect for the material's timeline. Once the workshop ends, we will carefully oversee the slow drying, two necessary firings, and the shipping of your three finished pieces directly to your home—a natural closing to the cycle we begin together.

  • Time to converse, listen, and share: Beyond the clay, this gathering aims to recover the original meaning of a filandón: creating a space to pause, meet others, share knowledge, talk unhurriedly, and learn from one another through manual work and storytelling.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

  • Dates: Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11, 2026.

  • Schedule: 9:20 am – 5:30 pm both days.

  • Location: Surroundings of the Muniellos Integral Nature Reserve (Asturias, Spain).

  • Group: Maximum 8 participants.

  • Price: €165 per person.

  • Full Process: The pieces require approximately a week and a half of drying time before they can go into the kiln. We will then perform a first firing (bisque) and a second glaze firing with transparent glaze. For this reason, you won't be able to take them with you when Filandón ends. We will handle the entire process and ship the finished pieces to your home, with shipping included within the Iberian Peninsula.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Age and Experience: No prior ceramics experience is necessary. The workshop is open to adults and youth aged 11 and up (minors must be accompanied at all times by a participating adult).

  • Physical Condition and Mobility: This is an outdoor activity requiring walking on mountain trails, including moderate inclines and hill climbs. Good mobility, agility, and autonomy for outdoor walking are required. If you have any questions about whether the route is right for you, please contact us before booking.

  • Language: The gathering will take place entirely in Spanish, so a fluent level of listening comprehension is required to follow the dynamics and group conversations.

  • Transportation: A personal car is required to travel between activity locations, as there is no public transport in the area.

  • Equipment: We recommend wearing suitable mountain walking shoes (with good grip) and comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty while working with clay or in the forest.
